I am overseeing the developement of a new digital optical imager. Our previous instrumentation uses analog detection techniques and industry-standard data acquisition boards to collect light measurements from a target medium. They are therfore subject to the inherent noises and limitations of analog electronics. To improve instrument performance and to offer greater flexibility, we are designing an new imager that employs an integrated Digital Signal Processor at its core. Our goal is to realize a versatile, compact, high-precision optical-measurement system that facilitates real-time dynamic imaging. Once Instrument is complete, we will use it to investigate patients afflicted with Rehumatoid Arthritis. We hope to distiguish functional characteristics between healthy joints and those infected by RA, and quantify those differences as a measure of the disease progression.
